The County Sheriff’s Office in Cumberland (www.ccsonc.org) is the liaison between law enforcement and the Committees for the Neighborhood Watch, and local businesses, as well as for other organizations. They have a Community Policing Unit that assists the local neighborhoods and local communities with their organization of the Watch Programs, as well as help with individual citizens and local businesses with surveys of the security of their properties.

This Community Policing Unit has the responsibility of deploying the Mobile Command Posts from the Sheriff’s Office (www.ccsonc.org) to specific crime scenes.  These could be special events, concerts, lectures, or any place where there may be some incident in which there may be a need for a Mobile Command Post. They also maintain all the speed measuring devices for the Sheriff’s office, and operate the Sheriff substation that are located throughout the county.

CCSONC.ORGDeputies are assigned to the Policing Unit and are responsible for giving safety briefings to local businesses, the neighborhood watch committees, churches, and to senior centers. Community Policing has deputies who conduct bike patrols in various neighborhoods and close to businesses, and the also conduct some fund raisers for funding the ‘Shop with a Sheriff’ program. This program helps families from the Cumberland County area who are in need during the Christmas holiday season.
Some other areas that the Policing Unit is involved with are the Nuisance and Abatement programs, along with the Project Life Saver.

Uniformed road patrols are the most likely to represent the Sheriff’s Office and make the first contact with any of the citizens of Cumberland County. For this reason, every officer is expected to carry out their duties in a proper, efficient, professional, and honest manner.

To hold to this standard, all the officers have to familiarize themselves with law enforcements’ ‘Code of Ethics’, and also with their ‘Standard Operating Procedures’ that are set forth and then enacted by the Cumberland County Sheriff (www.ccsonc.org) along with all applicable policies and procedures. They must follow all directives of Cumberland County.

The Office of the Sheriff in Cumberland County (www.ccsonc.org) has a Special Services Office which performs a wide variety of daily services. This office may issue permits for buying pistols in the Cumberland County jurisdiction. Any concealed carry permits that are applied for and then issued, go through the Special Services Office. They also are involved in conducting background checks in regard to job applicants, education, and housing. They electronically scan fingerprints and print them on two cards for all job applicants. This is also done for concealed weapon permits and professional licenses. This office performs warrant checks for those who may be seeking shelter from one of the many homeless shelters in Cumberland County. These open warrant checks regarding temporary shelter are done for free.

Cumberland County’s Child Support Enforcement is a specialized unit of the Sheriff’s office that is assigned to the Fugitive Division. This unit was created via a contractual agreement between the Department of Social Services in North Carolina, and the Division of Health and Human Services, along with the Board of Commissioners of Cumberland County and the Cumberland County Sheriff. This contract gets renewed annually.
